Curriculum Overview
    1. Breakfast-Students will be able to receive breakfast upon their arrival to school. When they come in through the 3rd grade entrance, they will have the option to take a breakfast bag. Breakfast is served from 8:35-8:50 ONLY. There is no charge for breakfast. If students arrive after 8:50, they will not be able to receive breakfast.
    2. Phonics- 95 Phonics Core Program, focuses on concepts of spelling rather than memorization. This is similar to our Fundations' Program. 

    3. ELA-We will continue to use The Benchmark Literacy program. There will be 30 minutes of whole group reading and 60 minutes of small group instruction/centers.

    4. Novel Units- We will be reading 3 novels this year and completing various activities for each novel. We will be reading: Stone Fox; Because of Winn-Dixie; and Charlotte’s Web

    5. Recess- 20 minutes outside, jackets needed with cold weather

    6. Lunch- Please send lunch money in an envelope with the  child’s name. The menu is able to be viewed on our district website.

    7. Writing- Writer’s Workshop (25 minutes). We will be using The Benchmark Literacy Program, independent writing, as well as conferencing daily. This model also consists of using the writing process, modeling, mentor texts, use of rubrics to grade, and forming paragraphs.  The genres that we will focus on are Narrative, Opinion, and Informational. 

    8. Math- The Go Math curriculum meets the Common Core Standards. We will work in large & small groups. A completed review page will be sent home the day before a test. We will also be focusing a lot on the multiplication basic facts. 

    9. Academic Lab-An academic, teacher facilitated time where students have the opportunity to enhance learning through extension activities that offer a hands on approach. There will be different topics covered throughout the year. Anything taught during this period will not be graded.

    10. Social Studies/Science- S.S will be taught marking periods 2 and 4. Science will be taught marking periods 1 and 3. During S.S we will be focusing on the 7 continents, the 4 major oceans, the 50 states, historical figures in history, as well as government branches. During Science we will dig deep into fossils, different environments, the life cycle of animals, and much more!
